Clicker training for cats!
Yes its true! Although clicker training is mainly associated with dog training, its methods are used to train many different species of animal. Many animals, including cats trained for television and movies are often trained via clicker training. This method is also commonly used in zoos and parks to train large animals to assist with handling and veterinary treatments. Clicker training is based on operant conditioning, using positive reinforcement (a treat of some sort) and a marker signal (the click) to shape a new behaviour. Clicker training teaches animals to think for themselves as they must work out what it is they are being rewarded for and what they must do to continue getting those rewards. Many cats love the mental stimulation clicker training provides and it can also help to effectively retrain a cat from an inappropriate behaviour. If you would like to try clicker training your cat, a clicker and training instruction will be provided as part of your consultation fee. |
