I have studied canine behaviour and different training methods extensively. In addition, my regular work with dogs has given me great insight into the canine mind and the various ways dogs learn. I have found that clicker training is THE easiest and most fun ways for a dog to learn a new task, and utilise this form of training where appropriate.
Whether your dog is a new puppy or an adult dog, I will equip you with the knowledge and skills to successfully understand your dogs motivations and shape his or her behaviour using positive reinforcement training techniques.
What you will receive:
- An in-depth consultation and an opportunity for you to ask questions or raise any concerns about your dogs training and behaviour
- The keys to effective leadership and a well-behaved dog learn how to effectively change behaviour without confrontation and punishment based methods
- A practical training session with your dog
- Natural Animal Solutions Behavioural and Training Guide either for puppies or adult dogs. This guide takes you through effective leadership skills, ingredients for optimum mental and physical wellbeing, ideas on how to keep your dog occupied and contented, how to deal effectively with behavioural problems as they arise, the theory behind clicker training, and step-by-step instructions on how to teach your dog basic obedience commands and beyond. The puppy version also includes guidelines on living with a new puppy, how to provide effective socialisation, and covers many puppy related issues such as biting, chewing and toilet training
- A training clicker and treats to begin training with
- Free follow-up telephone or email advice for as long as required.
Note that a training consultation will also cover any behavioural problems you are experiencing at no additional cost (see dog behavioural modification page for further details).
Training packages
You may prefer having ongoing one-on-one tuition, much as you would if you went to weekly obedience classes - but without the distractions of other dogs and people, and at a time that suits you. Training packages are available, where you can decide the number of sessions you would like. This provides you with the opportunity to have a customised training programme suited to you, your dog and the particular areas of training you require. Sessions can take place in a range of environments including your own home and/or public venues such as a park.
The benefits of one-on-one training compared to group classes
I have nothing against group dog obedience training classes. However group training does not take into account each dogs unique learning patterns or behavioural difficulties. Many dogs do not have the ability to learn effectively when faced with the multiple distractions occurring during classes. Similarly, many owners find they struggle to keep up with classes and drop out. In a group situation it is often not possible for trainers to work one-on-one with owners and dogs that are having difficulties. Another disadvantage is that many dogs learn to be obedient in a class situation but do not transfer this obedience to the home or external environment. By providing your dog with a solid training programme that begins in his own home and territory, it will be easier to gain control over him in all environments.
Clicker training
The clicker is not a fad or an unnecessary gadget. Clicker training is based on the scientific principles of operant and classical conditioning, using positive reinforcement (a treat of some sort) and a marker signal (the click) to shape a new behaviour. The clicker is an extremely powerful tool that audibly marks a correct behaviour, making it easier for the dog to understand when he or she has behaved correctly. Dogs are not verbal animals, and the clicker is more clear, concise and unique than human words or merely throwing treats. Clicker training accelerates learning and teaches dogs to think for themselves they must work out for themselves what behaviour is getting them rewards. We are not pushing dogs into positions or shouting meaningless commands at them, nor is there any punishment if the dog gets it wrong this builds confidence and trust towards the handler. Most importantly, dogs love it and they learn new behaviours so quickly most people are blown away by its effectiveness!
