About Natural Animal Solutions
Natural Animal Solutions offers a modern and holistic approach towards animal behaviour and training, and believes all aspects of an animals physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing must be taken into account in order to achieve effective results. As a truly professional service Natural Animal Solutions is dedicated to the most humane, effective, proven and up-to-date behaviour modification and training methods. No yelling, chokers, prong collars, harsh or confrontational methods are ever used. Methods are fun and rewarding for the animal, aimed at reducing stress, building confidence, and teaching the behaviours we want, rather than ineffectively punishing those we dont.
Many behaviourists and trainers claim to have unique ways of changing behaviour, or base their canine methods upon wolf pack or dominance theories, whereby dogs are subjected to unnecessary and irrelevant rules and regulations in the belief that all behaviour problems will disappear by establishing ones self as the alpha dog or leader of the pack. In many cases harsh and outdated treatment is also used that not only damages the relationship between animal and owner, but also reduces the capacity of the dog to learn due to the effects of stress upon brain function. There are no secrets to effective behaviour modification or training - the most successful methods are based upon proven scientific principles and understanding and it is easy for anyone to apply these principles once they know how.
Introducing your animal behaviour and training specialist
Animals are my passion. After many successful years employed in the corporate world, I still felt strongly I had missed my calling. My desire to work with and assist animals led me towards undertaking the following qualifications:
- Veterinary Nursing (Otago Polytechnic)
- Principles of Canine Behaviour paper (Massey University)
- Advanced Diploma in Canine Behaviour Management (COMPASS, UK) currently under completion
- Think Cat a certificate in feline psychology (Centre of Applied Pet Ethology, UK).
Additionally, I have completed partial studies in Animal Naturopathy. The knowledge gained from this training, combined with my veterinary nursing qualification and experience, provides me with a unique understanding of how physical and emotional conditions can affect behaviour and training abilities.
I am committed to continuing my education in all aspects of animal behaviour, training and welfare by keeping up-to-date on the latest findings and techniques, to ensure my animal clients are receiving the best possible care. Part of this commitment involves my full membership of The Association of Pet Dog Trainers Australia Inc (APDT), and this provides assurance to clients my behavioural and training knowledge and methods adheres to their strict code of ethics.
As part of my commitment to animal welfare, I am a regular volunteer for the Wellington SPCA, and support many worthwhile animal charities. I offer a free advice service to animal welfare organisations, both in New Zealand and overseas, and receive referrals from vets and animal welfare organisations throughout New Zealand. I write behaviour articles for a number of NZ animal related websites and magazines, and my work has been featured in various NZ publications. I have cared for many foster kittens (along with the occasional rabbit, hedgehog or bird) in our home, and have special interests in the rehabilitation of feral cats, and dogs and cats that lack confidence due to past abuse or lack of socialisation.
Every year thousands of dogs and cats are abused, dumped, passed to new owners or animal shelters, or euthanaised due to behavioural problems and a lack of understanding. It is my strong desire to share the fundamental principles of humane and effective animal behavioural adjustment and training in order to avoid such unnecessary and heartbreaking outcomes. I find it immensely satisfying to assist others to work towards a better understanding of their animals behaviour, and in the process, foster a closer bond between owners and their animal companions.

HELP! We require more on-call helper dogs and handlers who live in the Upper Hutt area (or are willing to travel). Your dog must be calm around other dogs and in a variety of situations, be reasonably trained and no t show aggression. If you don't have a dog but are still keen to assist, or have a dog you are happy for someone else to handle then we would also like to hear from you! Please contact us for more information.
